## Article

The ads manager flashes 3.2× ROAS and it looks like a green light. Then you subtract COGS, refunds, and creative production and the “win” is a rounding error. Return on ad spend is a ratio — not take-home profit.

A ROAS calculator still belongs in the weekly ritual. You just have to read it next to margin, not instead of it.

## The ROAS formula

ROAS = Revenue from ads ÷ Ad spend

Spend £1,000. Attribute £2,400 in revenue. ROAS = 2.4 (often written 240% or 2.4×).

That says nothing about whether £2,400 of sales left enough after product cost. If your gross margin is 40%, contribution on that revenue is £960 — already under the £1,000 media cost before you count people and tools.

## What “good ROAS” actually means

There is no universal target. A 2× ROAS on 70% margin software can print money. A 4× ROAS on 18% margin wholesale can still lose. The useful question is: does ROAS beat 1 ÷ gross margin?

If margin is 50%, you need at least 2× ROAS to cover COGS on attributed revenue before overhead. If margin is 25%, you need 4× before the product cost is even paid. Then add a buffer for returns and the hours you spend in Ads Manager.

## Calculate it in seconds

Use the free [BryteTools ROAS Calculator](https://brytetools.com/tools/roas-calculator): enter revenue from ads and total spend, get ROAS and a simple profit snapshot. It runs locally. Paste numbers from Meta, Google, LinkedIn, or a blended sheet — the math does not care which pixel fired.

Then sanity-check unit economics with [Profit Margin Calculator](https://brytetools.com/tools/profit-margin-calculator) so you are not scaling a campaign that cannot survive a 10% CPC bump.

## Mistakes that fake a winning campaign

- Reporting ROAS on revenue, deciding on ego. Always convert to contribution: revenue × margin − spend.

- Mixing new-customer and returning-customer revenue without saying so. Remarketing ROAS is not the same as prospecting ROAS.

- Ignoring refunds. Pull net sales if your stack allows it.

- Optimising to a 7-day click window you do not believe. Pick a window, stick to it for tests, and do not change it mid-sprint.

## FAQ

How is ROAS calculated?Revenue attributed to ads divided by ad spend. Same formula for Meta, Google, TikTok, or a spreadsheet of boosts.

What is a good ROAS?The one that clears your break-even ROAS after margin and fees. Copying a “4× is good” tweet is how shops overspend.

Is ROAS the same as ROI?No. ROI usually nets all costs. ROAS is media efficiency. You need both.

Can I use this for Shopify or WooCommerce?Yes. Enter the revenue your ads actually drove in the period, not storewide GMV unless that is truly all paid.

Is my campaign data stored? No. BryteTools runs the calculation in your browser.
